What the Heck, Mr. Beck?
Everyone's heard of the Oprah Effect (and many have been swept up in it). If an author can get onto Oprah's must–read list, their books are sure to rocket to instant popularity.
Conservatives have their own version in talkshow phenom Glenn Beck. He recently highlighted an obscure economist of the past, whose book then shot to the top of the Amazon.com best–seller list (see Kerby Anderson's radio program on Hayek below). So when Beck held a rally called Restoring Honor on the capital mall recently, Tea Party activists and others thronged.
The event was a lightning rod of controversy, especially since it was held on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the site of MLK's famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and on the anniversary of that seminal address. Luminaries of the Left like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson led countermarches. But Beck shelved the normal political rhetoric and called for a sort of spiritual revival, appealing to the honor for which the rally was named.
But was such a welcome thing for religious conservatives—particularly evangelicals—all that it seemed? Probe intern James Detrich takes issue with Mr. Beck.
